I went to this guitar store in Maryland last summer called Hot Licks and they were really nice about everything. They had one guy just show me everything I wanted to see. I sat down for like an hour with a few different Jacksons and a MESA/Boogie Triple Rectifier half stack and just shredded it up. It was awesome, because the guy showing me stuff was an "alternative" or pop-rock guitar guy and he played some stuff when I was leaving that was sort of shreddy but really half-assed. I felt good about myself after that, I bet they're encouraged to make the customer feel like they're awesome.

I liked the amp for basic shreddery and chunk stuff, but Mesas just don't have the same bite as a Marshall. Marshall's can sound fat and gain-heavy like a Mesa, but Mesa's just can't pull off the British roar.

with that statement, i might be as bold to say that you just aren't familiar enough with your tone settings and options

I don't own a Mesa, and maybe I'm just saying this because I really wish I could have one, but I'm not giving up my Marshall. I've spent days just playing with my tone knobs and I found that the best way to make it sound awesome is to dime everything and then stick the mids and presence out by rolling the bass and treble to a little below full and roll the Gain Sensitivity back to about 3 o'clock. I didn't have that kind of time with the Mesa, but I tried to get my midrangy cutting sound and it wasn't happening.

the midrange crisp is what i remember most clearly about the mesa. most of the marshalls i've heard also have a hum to them with the dirty kicked in. the mesa was absolutely silent clean and dirty. I love that. it saves a lot of time for clarity in the studio

Yeah, my Marshall has some hum. I'm looking to get a noise gate for it but when I play amps without hum I kind of get a "is this thing on?" type of feeling. Besides, I mostly play live anyway and a little hum is no problem on stage. Maybe I didn't twist the Mesa's knobs enough but I still love the classic Marshall grind.

They're both handmade, high-gain amps, but the Soldano sound is closer to a hot-rodded Marshall while the Mesa is more of a really high-gain Fender. Alot of shred guys use Soldanos, but so does the douche from Good Charlotte. A really underrated amp maker is Peavey. Joe Satriani and Eddie Van Halen both have custom Peavey models and the one's I've played have sounded great.

it seems that with the right guitar, even a mediocre practice amp can sound really sweet. Whiddon had a Tom Anderson guitar and that MESA and i couldn't have asked for a better sound, clean and dirty. But I'm still pretty amateur on the whole deal, other than EQing, but that's not a field of mastery, it's a field of understanding

I've got a custom-made Carvin SC-90S with a mahogany neck through mahogany body and a half-inch AAA flamed maple top. It's got an ebony fretboard with twenty four jumbo frets and mother of pearl block fret markers. A Carvin tune-o-matic bridge with stop tailpiece and two Carvin twenty-two pole humbuckers, one Super Distortion at the bridge and one Classic series at the neck.
It sounds awesome.

Need to write a Maslow paper dealing with "Raisin in the Sun," read about 120 pages from the Invisible Man, and AP History. We finally arrive to World War 1. Going to make chai tea and eat a strawberry brick cake. Yum!

Listening to Riders of the Storm by the Doors and wishing I was hanging with my college friends. I don't miss college so much, but I miss them a lot.
