I started learning Orestes today. I stopped, because I couldn't get it to sound right. I think he's using a chorus pedal, which I do not have.

he does use quite the bit of chorus, which I find a little funny. Although chorus on a nicely distorted guitar can sound really bad ass, especially if doubled and panned. It's like a triple chorus, but not cheesy.

I like Mer de Noms a helluva lot more than Thirteenth Step, and I have no idea why people say Thirteenth Step is better.

I prefer Thirteenth step because of the pertinence it has to my life, having grown up around alchoholism and marijuana use. For those of you who don't know, it's a concept album about overcoming addiction. The "Thirteenth Step" is a reference to a mistake sometimes made after the 12-step program, becoming sexually involved with somone else int he program and forgetting about what you were originally doing. It also touches me more musically. That's why some people say it's better.
All of this aside from the obvious fact that there are 12 tracks, most of them having to do with drug abuse/addiction, and all of them being topped with Gravity, which is for me one of the most beautiful songs to come out in the past few years.

That's really good to know
It's currently in my cd deck in the van, I'll pay more attention next time through.
Mer de Noms is nowhere near as compositionally advanced and musically calculated as Thirteenth Step. As the name states, it's just a list of songs. A bunch of names. Still a concept album, but I think it was done after all the songs had been written.
edit: I like the album a lot more now that it's put into context.

A sea of names, to be more specific. I prefer them both to eMOTIVe. I'm still glad I bought eMOTIVe, and I did get my money's worth, it's just not as spectacular as the other two. Covers usually aren't spectacular, but these are good covers. Tool has also done some impressive covers of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's "No Quarter," and Peach's "You Lied."

Gravity just finished. In light of the new context, it's very touching.

That's a very bold statement. I'd retort, but you're never around.

No one told me that Billy does some singing on eMOTIVe. I love this, man. Also, I'm coming to the conclusion that Maynard actually may not be capable of vibrato.
edit: they really Tooled it up with the snare engineering on this album too. It's much less... deep... big... something.
