who do you look up to or admire in music?
billy corgan is a pretty good songwriter. his lyrics are awesome and the musicality of the pumpkins is something that has changed my life, pretty much.
i also find nick zinner of the yeah yeah yeahs an inspiring guitarist, using samplers and stuff, creating an awesome enigmatic yet rocking sound, all on his own without a bassist or another guitarist to lean on.
i'll post some more later, along with pictures.

Adam Jones, of course. Tool as a whole is a really huge inspiration to me. A Perfect Circle is another big one. They taught me that a song doesn't need power chords, or even chords in general, to be good. Les Claypool plays bass, but he's also inspirational with his approach to music. Lots of wierd experiemental stuff. There are lots, that's just a few. Oh, and Gavin (I forgot his last name) from Bush inspired me to play guitar after I saw a live video of "Glycerine." It was awesome. It started raining half way through, and looked really sweet.

There are three guitarists that have a huge influence on my playing and my views on music in general. They are:
Yngwie Malmsteen Dave Murray Tony Iommi
Yngwie didn't invent the idea of using classical techniques in Metal, but he was the first to elevate Metal music from songs to compositions. He is also possibly the fastest and most technically adept guitarist of all time
Dave Murray has been the lead guitarist of Iron Maiden for almost thirty years. He knows how to write a good song, play a good solo, and be part of a band. When I'm writing a song, I almost always reference his work with Maiden as a benchmark.
Tony Iommi invented Metal. If you play it, you owe him your soul.

Even though I am mostly a bass player, I have never really looked up to many bassists. I of course think Flea is amazing, and Mike Dirnt and Jason something (from Metallica) are rad, but none of them have ever really inspired me. Billy-J from Green Day has probably been my biggest influence just by the way he entertains the crowd. So what if he can't solo worth crap, he writes awesome music and gives an awesome show, thats what i think matters most and is what i have always tried to do.

Even though I don't play shit except for air drums and guitar, there are several musicians that really blow me away. Neil Young. Rockin' since the 60s. Played so many different people, from Bob Dylan, CSN, Crazy Horse, and Pearl Jam. His writing is pretty hit and miss, but over the practically 40 years he's been doing music, he's written an amazing amount of really good songs. David Byrne. Of the Talking Heads, and his own solo stuff. High quality pop would never be the same without him. Roger McGuinn and John Fogerty. Of the Byrds and CCR, respectively. The Beatles and Beach Boys are great, but these days, I just can't get enough of the 60's Byrds and CCR. Tom Scholz. Boston lead guitarist. Hearing More than A Feeling on one of my dad's old cassettes brought be into the world of rock, and I'll never be looking back. His playing rocks. Dave Murray. Iron Maiden lead guitarist. There's a reason Iron Maiden is the best metal band. Actually, all of the Maiden members are great. Rik Ocasek. Leader of the band the Cars. Their debut is one of the greatest debut albums ever. Surrender to them.I'll add more later. Eddie Vedder. For some reason, I've always liked Pearl Jam. They are pretty hit and miss, but they are still making some of the best rock out there. Debbie Harry. Not enough women on my list. All I can say is Blondie is one of the greatest bands of all time. They're at the top of New Wave with the Cars. I love the band, and I love her.

I left out the guy fromt he Toadies. Anybody who plays or listens to 90's alt rock or grunge or any of that owes it to themselves to listne to this guy. All of the toadies actually. This guy is great though. Nobody plays like him.

Yeah, the Toadies rock! I'm listening to Paper Dress right now.
Also, I need to put Sting on my list. Not the new Sting (with his jazz and all). I'm talking about the old Sting from Sting and the Police. Amazing band.

Billy Howerdel of APC is cool. Daron Malakian (from System of a Down) is cool because he just knows how to freakin' rock. He's not a spectacular guitarist, he just knows how to rock.

That's not Alexi Laiho. I don't know where you got that picture of Simple Plan's lead singer (who is my hero), but here's a real picture of Alexi Laiho:

ahhh that guy made me a "emo" CD when we were going out. He said something like, " Here's the good stuff" and I went home and listened to it. It's shit. And the funny thing is, he told me that he used to listen to heavy metal, and that the Bible told him it was bad or something. He wanted me to make Asa stop listening to Metal.
