I was listening to "American Pie" today. What is it about? I remember hearing about all these theories, and it's about some plane crash.

That was a tragic day.
But what's even more tragic is that Don McLean wrote and recorded that song. What an awful piece of poopoo.

Hmm. I've never seen it that way. I thought he did the song quite nicely actually. It obviously touched him deep inside, the day the music died.
Somebody needs to write another song about the time when the music died when nu-metal and emo came on the scene.

bah, i think writing songs about musicians or music is just a cop out to get people to like you.

As long as there is passion and a good beat to the music, its okay by me. Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" is a reactionary piece to Neil Young's "Southern Man". Both are damn fine songs. "Rock and Roll Band" by Boston is kickass as well, and "Tamborine Man" by Dylan "Piano Man" by Billy Joel are classics. Both are passionate, so what's the problem?

There's a such thing as fake passion. Doing it only for the show. Acting like it touches you more than it really should.

Fuck it. It obviously struck some kind of chord with in me. I like it, what can I say. It sounds passionate. I can't ask for much more than that.

songs dont need real passion, hell, any passion to be enjoyable to listen to. im not saying passion and emotion are a bad thing, just that they arent needed.
with you people its almost as if you're "uncool" if every song you write isnt dripping with sorrow or anger. expressing emotion isnt the only purpose of music. some people just play music to show everyone else how much ass they kick, such as yngwie malmsteen. his music still rocks.

I do agree with you, however, passion and emotion aren't really terribly similar. I listen to plenty of songs that don't have much or any emotion to them that I consider spectacular. However, I think for any song to be decent, the group performing the song should be passionate about what they are doing, otherwise its going to sound like halfass shit.

by passion i mean feeling strongly about the subject matter of the song. i think when you say bands need to be passionate about what they are doing you mean they have to be enjoying it(it being the whole being part of a band and playing every night thing) not doing it just for the money. if thats what you mean, then i totally agree with you.
i just read through that, and im not sure if it makes any sense

bah, i think writing songs about musicians or music is just a cop out to get people to like you. I don't know about that. I really like the Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Freebird" and it's about the death of Duane Allman. But, they were good friends, so it's obviously different. I don't think Don McLean ever jammed or got drunk with Buddy Holly.

So, Alex, you're saying Malmsteen doesn't have passion?
You can write a song and get cocky about it and play it and put on a show like you put your heart and soul into it, or you can write a song and play it and feel incredible satisfaction every time something goes just right, especially if it takes a lot of effort/skill. Genre is irrelevant. Passion is loving what you're doing.

I think he meant that since most of Malmsteen's songs either don't have lyrics or have really silly lyrics ("I Am A Viking"...) then he isn't passionate about their themes. He just enjoys kicking ass. Passionately.
