the only use for karate is kicking peoples asses, and since andy has never kicked anyones ass his class probably sucks. and dont try and tell me im missing the whole point of karate...your wrong. im right. my friends dad is the judge. how many times have you seen somebody exercising their hard-earned karate/tae kwon do/kung fu/whathaveyou skills in a fight? ohoh, right, they do it all the time in movies. Judo, hapkido and the like, now those are different. The point is feeling confident that you could kick ass *if need be* After a couple years of martial arts, this confidence seems apparent without the use of words. The ass-kicking confidence glows and people befriend you rather than bash your windows

Tae Kwon Do isn't really all that much of a reliable style......for most schools they let you walk in an pay for a black belt. It's incredibely rare to find a teacher that has an actual credible rank in Tae Kwon Do. Granted, when you find one of thsoe guys, it's a pretty damn good style, much more oriented towards kicks than other styles of martial arts, but when mastered effective, but for the most part, if someone says "I do Tae Kwon do," it basically means they want to sound important...........Kung Fu really doesn't have any combat effect techniques until you get really high up, like grandmaster and stuff, Karate-do is about the discipline of the style, and Karate-jitsu is more about the techniques and the fighting styles. Same with ju-do and ju-jitsu. Ju-do, for all it's throws, is still the dicsipline of the tenants of the style, and ju-jitsu is the techniques for fighting. With any Japanese style of martial art, if it ends with "jitsu" it means "techniques," and if it ends with "do" it means "discipline." I'm pretty sure Hapkido is the Japanese discipline, with all their funky stealh and some contortionist stuff, with nin-jitsu being the actual techniques, but I could be wrong about Hapkido. If ya have any more questions about martial arts(I doubt it though, I'm not seeing an over whelming amount of interest here, just pm me or something.....

i took tae kwon do for about two years, but one of my instructors was ranks one of the best in aau. he was insane. you should see that guy jump. i'm talking straight up, back touching the ceiling. i guess the style we studied was considered the more traditional kind. i'm so out of shape now though...

Yeah see, that's real Tae Kwon Do, you don't really see that kinda stuff all that often anymore because Tae Kwon do adn Karate-do are pretty much the most widely known martial arts around and as such there are a lot of "poser" styles out there claiming to be Karate-do or Tae Kwon Do to earn some money, when really, it's nothing special at all. But Tae Kwon do fakers far outshadow the Karate-do fakers.
and as for Hapkido/Tae Kwon Do vs. Karate-do, since yer saying discipline vs. discipline, I'm gonna haveta go with Karate-do, since it's less combat oriented and more oriented around improvment of the self.

(ande) i went to a martial arts competition thing in raliegh/durham NC like 5 years ago and it was mind-blowing. it took a day to realize those people were human. it was by far better than that clip. I'm only waiting for my next chance to go again.

I'm not really a big fan of the fighting aspect of it, granted, it's insane and pretty cool, but I prefer kata myself. Even though I'm a student of Karate-Do, I can't get over how amazingly beautiful the Kung-Fu katas look. I actually had a buddy from Mexico who was the world champion for kumite(fighting) back in '99, he's flippin' insane. And I won't even get started on my instructor Mr. Tanaka....oh god, the man is absolutely insane.......The only Karate tournaments I've ever been to are the ones held every 6 months up in Anchorage put on by Mr. Tanaka, I've seen some interesting variations on the katas when folks from other schools perform them. Plus the weapon katas(especially bo/sai/tonfa/kama) are some of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

the competition involved everything from kata (is that universal for all disciplines?) to sparring, to weapons, to coreographed weapons sequences, what have you. some people had designed weapons, mastered them, then pieced together a competitive show against the others with bos and nunchaku and what are those little sickle things? A Chinese Kenpo guy attached line to his little sickles and used them as sort of ball-and-chain for a while, then flipped around with feet flying, weapons spinning and barely missing him, whatnot. Another guy had this like 10 foot long actual ball and chain with little spikes that he designed. Then there was a big samurai guy that jumped as high as the rest of them and always seemed to know where the handle of his katana was, no matter where or in what orientation his head was. amazing. there was so much more, but.. amazing. very inspirational, you know, let you know that what you think your current limits are are now bogus and void

Kata is universal, so is kumite(though rules differ from style to style). The little sickle things are called kama, and the kama on a chain is called a kusari-gama, which is traditionally a ninja weapon; and the ball and chain weapon is another form of a kusari-gama, also used by ninjas. This stuff just blows my mind, I intend to keep on going with martial arts until the day I die, it's gonna take a lot to get as good as these people though, but I'm gonna branch out into other styles so I can get a nice broad base. But I think after I make black belt(so close!) I'm gonna learn to breakdance.......that would be awesome, a white boy breakdancin'.
And the little nightstick lookin' things are called tonfa, dunno if anybody cares about them though......

Yeah I was kinda in the same situation as Tucker, except my instructor moved to D.C without a even a good-bye......oh well, despite the fact that we lost a whole bunch of our students, there's still some of us practicing, and I'm now the "acting chief instructor" for our style in Kodiak, and we get a lot better instruction now, saiko shihan for PanAmerican baby! Yeah!(saiko shihan means he's the head for all karate of our style in the area, which happpens to span three continents.....) and he lives in Anchorage of all places. I'm just glad we're lucky enough to be able to be taught by this guy. You should see some of his demos......~whistles~ holy shit, that's all I have to say.....
