So you were doin' actual credible Tae Kwon Do then? That's pretty interesting, I've met one other dude who did that, and he was from Idaho.......yeah, I'm REALLY close to gettin' my black, I just took the test for my 1st degree brown this last weekend, course, Mr. Tanaka wants to make us sweat it out for a while before he tells us whether or not we passed, which makes sense, but yeah, we're always on the look-out for new students.

i figured someday i'd get back into it, but I've got this chronic hip problem that sometimes keeps me from walking. This is what happens after 20, i guess. My instructor was going to have me kick a wooden baseball bat in two with a low roundhouse (among other things) to pass the test. maybe it's a good thing i didn't get there with him. then again, it'd be a pretty cool thing to mount on my wall, considering my moderately narciccistic personality.

Hip problems can be nasty.......I never really saw the need for breaking boards and ice blocks or anything of that nature as a test of ability, I mean, to steal a line from Karate Kid(which was a terrible terrible terrible movie, that crap wasn't Karate) "No reason break wood, tree never attack me." It makes a lot of sense actually.....I mean sure, it's cool to be able to do, and it'll toughen ya up, but it really doesn't help to further your path along the discipline, or maybe I'm just too much into the mental discipline part of it. Ehhhh, whatever, eventually, I'll go into a more combat-oriented style of some sort. Course, my roudhouses suck ass, I'm not flexible at all, about the only kicks I'm worth crap at are a standard miagari(err, sorry, front kick) and sokutogari(side kick).....I've had to learn the Japanese terms for things as part of the training, which I'm glad for cuz I'd rather call it by the actual term than something like "standing punch" sakansuki just sounds so much cooler.

edit: breaking boards the accuracy/power combination
I had to do a spinning sweep with my heel followed by a spinning back fist while standing then an arial spinning heel all in one motion to get my brown. it took me two tries to hit them all accurately in the right spot to break them it was a little tough with all of them being spinning strikes
i guess the bat would just be utter brutality and intensity. I know i would do it. Man, it would be exhilerating

It really depends on the style that I'd be practicing whether or not I'd do it. Like with Karate-Do, I wouldn't do it because something like that has absolutely nothing to do with improving the self. But were I to be training in a combat-oriented style, you bet yer ass I'd do it!

Oh well that's handy, I figger, my style is about the same ratio only the heavier weight is on mental discipline, but it's fairly adaptable, I mean, there's all sorts of stuff set down for combat, but nothing like breaking boards, just combination techniques and counter attack techniques.

i guess in the beginning, the idea was to get it in our naive little heads that this class wasn't for learning how to kick ass. as soon as we registered that with kata and code, they started teaching us how to kick ass. Thankfully, I've never had to use it other than in competition. well, not really

Hahahahaha, well, I guess that works, dude, do you realize how much we've filled up with martial arts? It's not even about meditation anymore. Take that!

Sure, I'll take some, white though, but anyway, I think you can come up with an accurate name for this that reflects the new topic, Nic. Or you could use mine....

Or perhaps a new thread? I was sort of hoping more people had contributions to my question.
