o of course. i was just saying where mines at. i built my cab though, my "grill" is this really light messing material that seems to not add any noise to the recording. but i cant even record for the time being, for my sound card is waked out and i need a new one. yet i have no money

That's not the topic, Forrest. The topic is how to get a good distorted tone on tape.

Another good way is to just go direct. Usually I wouldn't support such blasphemy, but for you, Ande, it would be appropriate. Just run a cable out of your big effects board (stereo cable if you want to get fancy) and right into whatever you're recording into. That will get you a very consistent sound, even if it's not as good as sticking an SM-57 against a Marshall cranked to "11."

but running direct doesn't give the breathing tone i want.

Then start cranking your amp up, buddy! You will lose a little hearing, but I like to think of it as a sacrifice to the metal gods. You give them hearing, and they give you tone.

dude, you can't just crank it up. if anything you lose more tone that way.

Oh yeah, I forgot. You have a solid-state amp. Those sound worse as you crank them up. I guess you're just doomed to a life of shit-tone unless you buy yourself a real amp.

That's the choice I have, play loud or play clean. Seriously, my Marshall can get a good, loud, clean sound. The knobs just need to be tweaked seriously from the distortion tones. I don't really need to switch between them, though, and I almost never need a clean tone that loud. If I need a clean tone, I have my other amp, which I use when playing blues with Logan and those dudes.

oh, drewish, for the destortion, i noticed the same thing, i would have to tweak my eq endlessly to get anything that sounded anywhere near as mean as i wanted. it worked for me a couple times to do multiple recordings all at different ranges and layer them. one with a higher distortion, a mid, a lower and i actually would throw in a clean track but put the levels way down on it. layered all together, it sounds thicker. you got to be careful though, sometimes it just sounds like three piles of shit all mashed into one and the clean track will stick out like a sore thumb. i'm sure tucker or mega would have a much better idea of what to do though. and i don't use distortion anymore. clean tones are the new black.
now go ahead, brush that dirt off your shoulders.
peace

Don't listen to heybaumer. If there's anything that these forums have taught me, it's that heybaumer and tucker are the stupidest people in the world. Everything they say is idiotic and useless. Don't listen to him.
NIC LECHNER!! I wasn't talking about your amp. Carvin solid states are better than most tube amps. Sorry for the confusion.

sounds like you have some shitty gear, justin
playing loud shouldn't compromise your sound if you have as nice of gear you claim to have
