sounds like you have some shitty gear, justin playing loud shouldn't compromise your sound if you have as nice of gear you claim to have Oh Dang!

It doesn't have a clean channel, so to get a clean tone I have to mess with the gain and volume knobs as well as roll of the treble, presence, and mids a bit because it sounds like ice picks in your ears with everything up and a bright, clean tone. For distortion, though, it is awesome. I just turn every eq knob to "10" and, since my amp has two gain controls that work together (preamp volume and gain sensitivity) I put the first one to ten and the second to about half and the sound just crushes and gets better as it gets louder.

sounds like your amp is a piece of shit to me. i think you took it up the ass on that one. but with the way guys with big hair and tight leather get you all excited...you were probably okay with it.
seriously, clean is the new black.

setting your EQ's all at 10 is almost just like turning up the gain if you add 10 dB to each frequency at their set bandwidth (usually either 2 or three octaves), you just get a nearly flat boost along the whole spectrum, which is what volume and/or gain does. The gain is there in case you do eq cuts and sacrifice a little volume. you've got minor dips in the low-mid/hi-low and the high-mid/low-hi areas where the target frequencies for the eq are not. If you think 10 10 10 (10?) sounds good, maybe you should try 8 7 8 9 or 8 7 9 and turn up that gain to 11.

Well, the way the gain works on mine, the knob that works like a normal gain control is up to "10," but the other one is the one that doesn't change the volume, it just adds buzz from an extra circuit in the amp and sounds really nasty all the way up. So I get the same gain boost as with a little extra gain, but without so much muddiness and buzz.

Oh, and heybaumer, what the hell is "clean is the new black" supposed to mean?

alright,
so black has always been the big thing, always works...so when a new color comes in...say, pink...the saying goes "pink is the new black". well, if you want to wrangle hey baumer type slang, you just throw anything thats coming up in there "------ is the new black". so, i'm talking about clean tones. you should try it. maybe you could be one of the first metal bands with clean tone. you can get a lot more sound out of it. distortion certainly has its place, but you should learn to rock the clean sound.
blow me up.
peace
and if you are curious, its been in the works for a while, but brown really is the new black. now pop your collar and clean your shit up.

You know, I bet if I knew you in real life, I wouldn't have been such an asshole to you. I mean, I don't care what music you listen to, and I don't care if you like mine. In fact, my friend the Dance Commander listens to loads of music I can't stand but I still respect him. Also, it's nice to have someone to take the opposite point of view from me all the time, makes life more interesting. Oh, and it's nice to know you were using "clean is the new black" as a kind of personal in joke, because for just a second I thought you were being completely serious. I do use clean tones sometimes, but Metallica kind of ruined that for metal bands in the eighties so I only use my clean sounds for when I'm playing blues, jazz, or classical. Which I both play and listen to regularly. Half the time (or more) I just take an opinion I somewhat support and take it to the most extreme position I can and try to make people think I'm serious. As I can see by most of your responses, I gotcha! Anyway, I think I'm going to stop being as much of an ass on these forums. Not completely, because people are still stupid, but a little.
I'm not going to make a little joke at the end, that's your thing, heybaumer, and it's cool and I won't steal it.

why do people act differnt online? who are you guys trying to fool? I don't act differently. And I didn't mean it the way you think I did, I just meant that I would've gotten his jokes and been able to laugh at them. Like the people I know do with me.

make sure you're using the right kind of mic. do you know about the proximity effect? The closer you place your mic, the more low-end it gets. do not use a condensor mic for this though because you could ruin it (i don't know how much you know about your mics, but dynamics are for the loud stuff, condensors are for distant micing or vocals or acoustics. Very pressure sensitive). if you're still not getting the beef you want, you might have to get a different mic. I don't know how much they cost, but something like either an AKGD112 for more low end at maybe 4 or 5 inches away (experiment) or a Sennheiser 421 for closer micing. I think these mics are pretty expensive though... but hey, something similar. Your SM90 should work pretty well though. Get right up in the amp's face and point it at the cone, not the center of the speaker. actually, can you explain to me what the cone is? i'm not exactly sure what you mean.

i'll attempt to draw it for you:
outer rim (usually that rubbery stuff) / < cone (some durable rigid material. slanted) ) < center (round thing) \
edit: it's not spacing at the beginning of each line, but I think you can get it

i'm a little withdrawn at that advice though. everyone says to mic the cone, but I haven't done any research as to why this is common and/or optimal.
sound is so complex, it's awesome
