Mics aren't perfect. You have to isolate the instruments and recreate their true sound through signal and sometimes effect processors to get the music to sound like it does live. Basically, you don't know what you're talking about, all in all.

all i know is that the recordings me, ryan, kalen and kelly did with an analog recorder and 1 mic and 1 track sound a lot cooler than recordings we did with a bunch of tracks and mics and stuff. the music sounded a lot more like real music than just parts put together, because thats what it was. songs constantly change with the mood and feel of the band, and you cant capture that with everything recorded at seperate times on separate tracks.

you cant capture [(paraphrased) the live energy] with everything recorded at seperate times on separate tracks. Unless you know what you're doing. This is why there are schools of audio production. And instruments recorded in a studio are rarely played at different times. If you need a live show to maintain intensity, I don't think you like music enough.

I've thougt that for a long time. If the only way your music can sound intense is if you're all playing together like a live show, then you need to spend less time getting wasted and hacking through songs and more time composing things that sound intense no matter how they're played. I just got a Piano Tribute to Iron Maiden, and the songs hold up so well. There aren't even any vocals or drums, and the intensity is just as present.

Speaking of Piano Tributes, I reccomend the Piano Tribute to Tool to anyone who hasn't gotten quite into Tool. it puts their music ina a different light, and you can see, hear, rather, how awesome it is. This should go in the Tool thread I suppose. I'll go put it there. It can stay here too.
