Prog, short for "progressive rock" meaning not fitting (or not exactly fitting) into standard forms and structures for songwriting and musicianship in a rock setting. Usually characterized by songs of seven minute plus run time, extensive soloing, and odd time signatures or tempo shifts.

Yeah, seriously. But I will bring things the radio station doesn't have so you can play that if you want.

Paul Evans is good prog, and he's got some new stuff, I believe. Very cool and rocking. Modest Mouse is not prog.

yngwie and maiden being considered prog is one of the more ridiculous things i've ever heard.

Why?

For the most part, Ande is right. They are predomintaely not progressive bands/musicians, but there are exceptions. KMXT has Kasabian and Modest mouse (which are not prog), but I will bring some Tool, Peach, and maybe some other stuff I find kicking about my collection. It's your show, Miranda, we're just going to play like 6-8 songs and then go on about why they are good.

I said that. I wrote that Maiden could be considered prog on "a few songs." But Yngwie is seriously progressive stuff. Come on, listen to "Far Beyond the Sun" or "Icarus Dream Suite" and tell me that stuff is standard rock'n'roll fare.

I'll probbably just end up doing the turn system, where people get to play stuff in turns. I find that the most fair, because I do want your stuff played just as much as mine. Besides, it makes the show more diverse.
*note to Shawn* I got your R.E.M. C.D., so if you want it right away, I'll bring it with me to the rock show, but if not, I'll leave it in your box.

it's standard metal flare. I get the impression that you haven't listened to Yngwie very often. The only part of his music that even comes close to being standard is the material featuring vocalists. Most of it is instrumental and hardly able to be categorized. I call it Metal because it has alot of intensity as well as a dark, scary type sound from his use of diminished arpeggios and harmonic minor scales. The instrumental music (the real Yngwie music) has almost nothing in common with standard rock/Metal except that most of the time the snare is on two and four. And a "flare" is what you light beside the road. "Flair" is ornamentation, and "fare" is the substance or quality of something, as well as meaning food.

I think he means progresso, like the thick and meaty soup. Thor is think and meaty. Alex got confused.

Shut up, we're talking about soup. I am pretty sure Progresso does make soup, but they also make spaghetti sauce.
