Portugal. The Man A review by The Dance Commander This is a semi-local band, hailing from Wasilla, AK. This electronica quintet stimulates their listeners with something new and different. The three songs on their Pure Volume profile ( www.purevolume.com/portugaltheman ) were all three different, providing a different auditory journey with each. The songs are not just nice sounding either, they all three have beautiful lyrics. The first song, ‘Pelicans,’ is an upbeat song towards the beginning, but mellows out a bit. The second song, ‘Clips Comprehend,’ is a much more space pop sounding song, which reminded me even more of Portishead. The third song, ‘Showing Teeth,’ reminded me a bit of Radiohead’s stuff, with an extremely heavy drumbeat and some soft little nursery-rhyme-ish melodies under it. This song is definitely the most electronic out of the three, but it is no less enjoyable. The singer (I couldn’t find out which one of them it was, but I think it’s John Gourley) has a falsetto voice that fits perfectly with this music style, which was another thing that reminded me of the group Portishead, because they have a female vocalist. This is not to say they are Portishead rip-offs, they are simply more similar to Portishead than any other bands I have heard. For fans of electronica, space pop or simply experimental music, these guys are definitely worth the 10 minutes it would take you to check out their songs. Go ahead. Give a listen.
