Can a hippie be pretentious? Just curious. So, my whole recording dilemma is solved. Thanks to those who helped. Not that I have recorded yet mind you.

All hippies are pretentious, Forrest. And I hate them all, even more than I hate Jews.

All hippies are pretentious, Forrest. And I hate them all, even more than I hate Jews. i find it completely ironic that a metalhead would complain about hippies being pretentious.

i'm not really into the whole recording thing at all, but for the hobbyist, here is what i could suggest. a good analog four track recorder is going to cost you about 250 brand new. its going to have a nice warm, but very low-fi sound (that i rather like) even with noise reduction. its going to be simple enough to use, but mixing everything down is no fun. i use my fourtrack as a mixer now to run into my laptop for recording. other than that, it really is a hassle. i'm guessing you are a student DC, you probably live at home with your parents and christmas is around the corner. ask for an ibook. i'm guessing you hate macs, but get over it. the little things are work horses. the quality of recording on garage band, which comes with the computer, is surprising. if you get a good usb preamp and a good mic, you'll be set. if you decide that music is what you want, you can upgrade to higher level software. eventually, you are going to have to just pay for studio time if you go that far. for getting ideas down though, don't limit yourself to four tracks, and don't think that you are going to bounce tracks left and right, the quality will sound like a bad phone call. go for the digital, and have a nice tool for doing your homework, checking your email, making movies, etc. my only other advice: believe every word that comes out of tucker's mouth (or everything he types). he is smarter than you.

heybaumer's right about the ibook, Forrest. It's got more uses than a four-track and it's about as easy to use. You can get them for alot cheaper than $250, though, if you just check out ebay. I got mine for $60. This is a lot less than a computer (believe me, do you realize how much those things cost?) and I can just use my parents' computer.

Yeah, I do like Garage Band. I really don't have an opinion on macs since I don't game anymore, so yeah. I'll have to look at ibook prices.

Dude, if you can't afford the ibook, just go with the four-track. Not only is it easier to use than a computer, you can also get some snob appeal by being able to say "I only record to analog. Digital is false and not of my caliber."

How do you go about recording a piano? Like say, a grand piano?

you'll need a good condenser mic. maybe two. run them through some mic preamps and into a mixer into your computer.
that's the ideal way, i think.
condensers are really expensive though (the mics used for "silk rope" were some pretty nice stereo condensers. i used cheaper condensers on la bonne vie vous). i think alfonso has a condenser that he's trying to get rid of that you could buy off of him for a cheap price. if not, you could probably borrow the mic and other stuff from him if you ask nicely. what i did with the two mic set up is i opened the "hatch/door" whatever you want to call the opening to the piano, and i put one mic at the low end and one at the high end. then you could probably do something cool like panning the right mic to the right and the left to the left so the low end goes in one ear and the high in another, or even just flip that around. you still want to capture the middle, so angle them in a way. also watch your eq and mic placement, as the bassier, lower tones of the low end of the piano may cause peaking if the mic is too close. also, if it is not close enough the piano is too quiet and isn't as clear.
that's what little amateurish knowledge i have, i'm sure tim would be a bigger help.
