Alright, so I have some stuff to record. Yeah. Great. What now? I need to know what sort of program I need to get for my computer or whatever, and some basic stuff on recording something. Help. Please. Thanks.

haha, well... i'll just give you a basic rundown of what i do so you know what NOT to do, because i use what i've got, and even though it some, my sound's still dumb... or something.
anyway, for recording to your computer you'll need at the very least a mixer. this mixer's output will be connected to the input on your soundcard. i also have a little dinky mic preamp that i use to make things sound a little better (come in a little clearer and louder). Then basically you need some good mics. I just use a sure sm57 dynamic mic for guitars and then i have some audio technica that use for vocals. you can get the audio technicas in the upstairs of the coast guard cnovenience store... at least i think you still can. i also have random radio shack mics bought spontaneously, hoping eachtime, that this mic will sound better than the last one from rc. i guess they're really not all that bad, but i've had my problems with them. then i also have this little sony stereo mic that's worthless. i should never thrown away the receit. it does come in handy when i need an extra mic on the drums. ok so that's hardware. now you need a program. i use cakewalk music creator 2. or at least i pretend i know how to use it. it's kind of more of a MIDI based program. i also have cool edit pro 2.0. where can you get such programs. order them i guess, or pirate them (of which i'm guilty, cep2). there is actually a free one you can get called audacity. i'd link you if i remembered the site. i guess just google it. it's a goo beginning program, though unstable. i find that the more tracks you make, the more off time it gets, so you may want to mix down every once in a while. You mentioned before using a keyboard as a drum machine. i like to use a program called fruity loops which is made by cakewalk. it's pretty good i guess as a hobbiest program, but there are more professional programs out there. also another program is kinetic, which is more of a program for people who know nothing about music. but i guess that's my schpiel. i don't know how much that helped you.

That's a lotta stuff. Is there an easier way to do it? If I record on a 4-track or some such thing, can I just transfer it onto the computer and make it an MP3?

there is a way. i'm assuming analog? well basically you record onto the fourtrack and adjust your levels and whatnot and hook it up to your sound card. then you'll basically record to a program on the computer that way.

Yeah Analog. I like that a WHOLE lot more. Later when we start doing stuff as a band we'll need to figure out the fancy stuff anyway.. but for now, that will be a lot nicer. Now to get a four-track.

for the quick "get-it-on-tape" recordings that it sounds like you're looking for, buck up and get yourself the digital 8 track yaefer mentioned rather than the analog 4 track tape recorder. Easy hook-up to your computer and you make your money back with extreme convenience. They can even give you preset reverbs and delays and I believe some semi-parametric EQ, and burn cd's right off the device, but I'm not sure. Mic's come cheap if you don't care about them. The best mic for the money is the Shure SM57 (in my opinion). Exremely durable and beautifully wide frequency response. I use it religiously on my snare top when recording, but anything in the beefy mid-range. Great for live vocals too. I think they're about $80. Use your dividend and make christmas come early. It'll pay off big time. That timing discrepency on the Audacity program is all internal. when you start layering more and more tracks, the computer at some point won't be able to keep up depending on ram and your sound card and will skip sections of the tracks set at lower priority (toward the bottom of the screen) so it doesn't have to think so much. It doesn't change the waveform, however, so if you're confident you did it right even though it won't play back right anymore, go ahead and burn a copy and give the cd a listen instead. Andy and I tried this with success.

I'm sure there are easier ways, for my experience with the stuff, my pops wanted me to put some of his old vinyl lps on to cd and so I took his turntable hooked a cord from the headphones slot to the mic slot on my computer recorded it onto the computer and then burned it to a cd. Viola, instant(or something like it) music on yer computer(in .wav or .midi format)

Sonar and Audition seem to be the best low budjet sources for recording. You don't have to get into it too much, self explanatory. Keep the mic away from the computer when you do it, it creates a hideous hum which is difficult to extract. Sonar is a product of Cakewalk, it works just like a four-track, only the tracks are not limited, and you don't have to be careful with it. Make sure you have the metronome active while recording, be listening to it in headphones. It's tough to record everything on one track, a cleaner sound can be accomplished by breaking up the music into several tracks, and then editting each one for the perfect acoustics.
You probably knew this already. Good luck recording.

Hey Forrest, everyone on hear that thinks analog four-tracks are crap are just lazy. I've recorded tons of music on my old Fostex and if you just put some time into the performance, it will sound great. Digital does NOT sound better and is generally a waste of money. For a four-track, you can by a bunch of standard cassettes and just record away because it works just like a VCR. Try it, man, it's awesome.

Digital mastering and infinite tracks are a crutch for those without creativity or persistence. Shame on you.
