awesome awesome awesome band. just got their new cd a couple weeks ago and it's pretty good. i'd have to say my favorite album is to bury within the sound though. your thoughts on them? found out from alfonso that they have a pv site up (like many popular bands have been getting, which is unfortunate. pv was made mostly for unsigned bands) at www.purevolume.com/enginedown . those are songs off the new cd, just to give you guys who haven't heard it or the band a preview of them.

Thumbs up, WAY up, and you have to give them respect. They have been through SOOOOOO much crap this past year, and they are STILL out there, playing shows, and living the life:) THis is what REAL musicians do;)

yeah they have definately had a rough year. all their gear was stolen at the beginning of the tour and on top of that they've had some accidents and a lot of other crap. they have a massive debt on their heads right now. go to their main site and donate! or at least buy the album and help them out.

I just listened to their 3 songs on PV. Very cool stuff. I'll have to chase down a CD of theirs when I get a chance. (In other words, they just got tacked at the end of my approximately 50 band long to do list).

Very very good band. Andrew introduced them to me, and I like them a lot. I haven't heard their new CD, but To Bury Within the Sound is awesome. That's insane about their stuff getting stolen and all their accidents and whatnot...
I'll have to check out their pv site for those new songs. Funfunfunfunfun.

Actually I lied about the list. They are right near the top. Next to The Cure, APC, and T.Rex (a cd of whose I have in the mail YEAH).

this band's drummer, cornbread compton, is the most influential drummer in my life to date, bar none. He is my guru of power and confidence that I needed to involve my presence in a live show that most drummers lack. If given the chance, see them live, even if you don't really care for the music. The live show changes every preconception you may have had. They are so powerful on the stage. They are also some of the nicest guys I've met in the music business. They are not letting a little fame get to their heads. Very real guys, very friendly. They offered Andy and I pad thai at a show in Seattle in the upstairs "backstage" room at Graceland. They didn't even question how we got up there. haha

I have never listened to Engine Down. Someone needs to put up a description of their sound, cause I'm not going to spend my valuable time listening to them if I'm going to be disappointed. Even though Forrest likes them...I don't like everything he does.

I don't think you would like them Justin. Honestly, I would say you probably don't like a good 50% of what I do. U2... Radiohead.. Tool.. APC.. Sollective Soul... on and on and on. Maybe not 50%. Probably closer to like 30%, but my point is I wouldn't reccomend them to you. If I thought you'd like them, you would already know about them.

yes, engine down lacks tight leather pants, dark sunglasses, and jack ass solos. they do have amazing compositions and interesting timings though. you should still check them out, for the drumming if nothing else.
does joe satriani count as metal? because that guy is the saddest thing i've ever seen in my life.

i've heard people describe keeley's vocals for engine down to be emo the guy writes about his life and doesn't try to embellish his singing with unnecessary vibrato or falsetto. His register is very unique to his type of voice. I've talked with him, and his voice is pretty similar to mine, yet I can't sing like him. It's puzzling. Maybe he's just really good and I'm not. The guitars dance with each other. For all but the latest of their albums, both the clean and the distorted sounds are very raw, but specifically refined to suit their sound. A little hi-mid heavy, but they do what they have to do. The distortion is thin but raw and is as aggressive as any other, especially when paired and/or syncopated. The bass is tuned to a flat sound with a little string definition and little growl. The lines are clearly well thought out and fitting. He's not flamboyant and we should all thank him for that because the music does not call for standout basslines. He's not a soloist or a spotlight monger, he just plays what is best for the part and does a fantastic job. The drummer... goodness. As far as I'm concerned, he's the epitome of rock drumming. He knows how to tune his set and knows how to hit them right to get the appropriate dynamic at any given time. He chooses to use the more raw sounding Avedis Zildjian cymbals rather than the more bright and defined A Customs or the aggressively loud K Customs. His confidence can be heard through the album, but should definitely be seen. His power and precision and nearly flawless technique almost makes him the frontman of the band. Listen carefully to Songbird, and tracks 9 and 10 on the new album "Engine Down" for an extra tricky treat with a Latin Percussion Maraca. He replaces the stick in his right hand with a maraca and keeps rhythm while still playing with both hands. As rock as he gets, he displays an ample ambidextrous skill on stage switching hands on the snare and hats just for fun or to wipe a bead of stinging sweat out of his open eyes. He's a little guy with a huge sound.
Is that at all appealing to you Justin?

Thank you for spending that time, Tucker. I may just check them out because of the great review. But I noticed that no mention was made of the guitarists' lead or solo skills, I assume that's because they do not play solos or leads. Usually, that is an automatic disqualifier for me. When I hear a rock song, I demand a guitar solo. Also, I like when guys sing in their falsetto and when bassists go off. I like Iron Maiden (and they are not "buttrock," buttrock doesn't mean anything, they are metal, the most metal of all metal bands ever) and Maiden is all about Steve's lead bass, Bruce Dickinson's scream, and Nicko McBrain's loud, single-kick drumming as well as the insane dual (and now triple) lead guitars of Dave, Adrian, and Janick. So no, not really all that appealing. I'm gonna go listen to "The Number of the Beast" for a while.
