now, i wasn't saying that vibrato and falsetto are unnecessary, I was saying that he doesn't use them unnecessarily
and the lead/solo skills are fantastic, they just don't write music that calls for any blazing solos or shred sessions.

Thank you for spending that time, Tucker. I may just check them out because of the great review. But I noticed that no mention was made of the guitarists' lead or solo skills, I assume that's because they do not play solos or leads. Usually, that is an automatic disqualifier for me. When I hear a rock song, I demand a guitar solo. Also, I like when guys sing in their falsetto and when bassists go off. I like Iron Maiden (and they are not "buttrock," buttrock doesn't mean anything, they are metal, the most metal of all metal bands ever) and Maiden is all about Steve's lead bass, Bruce Dickinson's scream, and Nicko McBrain's loud, single-kick drumming as well as the insane dual (and now triple) lead guitars of Dave, Adrian, and Janick. So no, not really all that appealing. I'm gonna go listen to "The Number of the Beast" for a while. so basically, you like spotlight rock rather than having the band work together to share the glory in each song. I'm a bigger fan of listening to people work together to create something one man couldn't do by himself. Modesty is key. I love to see bands shine through modesty

Well, all the members of the band are incredible musicians(except Janick, nobody really cares about him that much.....), and they all do work together, but were they to take the spotlight, the could easily outshine most other musicians out there.

that brings up the question of what a good musician is. For me, it's not someone who picks up an instrument to get far better technically than anyone else. I don't think that's so different from just being really good at wiring a house or being above all others at a silly carnival game with the large stuffed apes. The spotlight shouldn't apply to a good musician. I do like maiden strictly for its buttrock qualities, but it's a little too arrogant for me to see it as a valuable source of information or fantastic songwriting. I'm using maiden as an example. I like a musician that knows what they need to do to support the other instruments. Being a good musician sometimes means not playing at all, knowing if anything were added on your part, it would take away from the artistic mix. Cornbread (ED drummer) is probably most often in the spotlight because he might be slightly arrogant, but he still knows when to shut up.

Well see, both Adrian Smith and Dave Murray use their guitar abilities to support each other, in fact in most any Iron Maiden line-up thing you see, you will notice that they have NO rhythm guitarists, both(well all three now but who cares about Janick....) of them play dual lead supporting each other. They're considered the fathers of the dual lead harmony/melody guitar playing, and most any band(mostly metal though) is using this idea. They support each other incredibely well, sometimes sounding like one guitarist. Steve Harris provides a nice solid backbone with his bass playing, but is still quite technical/elaborate in his playing, however, he doesn't have his bass turned up obnoxiously loud so it doesn't seem overbearing. Nicko McBrain, the drummer, has amazing drumming skillls, but again, isn't a massive show-off dude, he's definetly a wildman, but doesn't try to play over everyone else, dunno about him supporting the other musicians. And Bruce Dickinson just sounds like an air raid assault siren which rises above a lot of the other stuff.

i'm a big fan of melodic lead. one main difference between engine down and maiden (it's funny to compare the two) is keeley and jonathan do melodic leads in different relative rhythms, as opposed to for example the lead in hallowed be thy name. you know what i mean? not that one is significantly better than the other. they both have pros and cons specific to the conditions of each song.

It is an interesting comparison, but a good one nonetheless, I mean, Iron Maiden is pretty much THE herald of power metal, hell most metal in general and same with Engine Down, for like, uhhhh weird, insightful, alternative stuff? I know they're not emo, but I'm not sure what to call them......

i think it'd be best to just eternally contemplate which label to slap on them
they rock to me, so therefore, they're rock

Hahahahaha, that works, ya know, the one thing I never knew about metal and never made an attempt to find out, was why it was called "metal"........

they have a video now for 'Cover' off their self-titled. I made an engine down chronological compliation and left that one off because I found nothing likable about it. But oddly enough, now that I know it's probably going to be the one song that people might hear, it's starting to grow on me. I don't like that. It's like I'm not doing my own thinking.
they take a good month to respond to emails now instead of the two day delay. it's a kinda sad. they used to recognize me. i bet they don't anymore. kudos for financial upturn and hurray for rockus

i want one or both of these kinds of people to post here:
someone who can't believe how absolutely vomitly horrible engine down is and will tell me exactly what they think so i can argue with them
or
someone who can't themselves comprehend how such a group of people like the ed four got together to create such uncompromising brilliant rock so i can agree with them
either one will greatly enhance my appreciation for the band

and someone with cable, if you happen to see a video of these guys on mtv2 or something, could you let me know? i think they might have made the video for a submission with no guarantee of getting airplay

it might be cool if they get popular, but i hope they continue to do what they do. i mean not retaining their sound one way so that every new album sounds like an engine down album, but that they keep progressing so that they sound great with each new turn.

it might be tough to retain their tone and timbre from to bury within and demure. for one, they've already cleaned and thickened up their distortion for the self-titled, for two, they got all of their vintage gear stolen.
man...
and they all had vintage gear, i just found out today. that snare sound might be lost forever. some asshole made way with my favorite snare. damn it, i'm the one who deserves it because i like it so much. the other guy probably got it all out of tune and shit
damn it

here it is www.mtv.com/bands/az/engine_down/audvid.jhtmli've been to a couple of their shows and it was nothing like this. i don't like the video really, for two reasons: forementioned and it's a poor song to choose. they should have done 101 or And Done

i'm digging these advertisements at the beginning...
hmm. you know, if this video was the first i saw of them, i'd probably hate them.
... and we're buffering...
yeah, i think the video makes them look like any other band off of mtv that i would hate.

ok, i get it she's become the center of attention but then everyone's gone
i still don't care for the song too much though. i don't know what to think
edit: here's what i'll think. they still have to bury within the sound and demure. i loved it when they wrote in 5. i just hope they're not going downhill (in my preference's sense). i know i'll be buying the next album too because i always learn good things from cornbread, i just cross my fingers in hopes i'll like the music at least as much as i like the self-titled... sad times for me. well not entirely

I had only heard Bury within the Sound, but right now I'm listening to Demure for the first time. It's awesome.
